Case Study 4
When pain in her knee turned out to be more than arthritis this patient looked to the institute for lower extremity restoration for help. X-rays and a biopsy all pointed to bone cancer (osteosarcoma). Utilizing a multidisciplinary approach the physicians at the institute worked to save her leg. The cancerous joint was removed and replaced with an implant. The missing skin and tendons were reconstructed by moving a local muscle (gastrocnemius muscle flap). After postoperative cancer therapy she is walking and remains and active member of her family and church. |
